Day-wise itinerary

Day 1
Shimla
Drive up from Chandigarh. A night at moderate altitude before going higher — the gradual gain is what keeps this trip comfortable.

Day 2
Shimla to Kalpa
Along the Sutlej through Kinnaur. Evening view of the Kinner Kailash range from Kalpa.

Day 3
Kalpa to Tabo
The landscape turns from green to bare rock. Afternoon at Tabo monastery and its wall paintings.

Day 4
Tabo to Kaza
Dhankar monastery on its cliff, the Pin valley, then into Kaza.

Day 5
Key, Kibber, Komic, Hikkim
Key Monastery stacked up its hillside, then the high villages — and the post office at Hikkim, which will stamp a postcard for you.

Day 6
Kaza to Chandratal
Over Kunzum La to the crescent lake. A night under canvas at 4,250m, with the clearest sky on the trip.

Day 7
Chandratal to Manali
Down through Batal and the Atal Tunnel into Manali. The contrast after a week of desert is startling.

Day 8
Depart
Drive or overnight coach to Chandigarh or Delhi.
