Day 1
Arrive Leh — acclimatise
Fly into Leh at 3,500m. The whole day is deliberately free: rest at the hotel, drink water, no exertion. This day is not optional — altitude is the single biggest risk on this trip.

Day 2
Leh monasteries
A gentle day at Shey, Thiksey and Hemis, then Leh Palace and the old bazaar. Still acclimatising, so the pace stays slow.

Day 3
Leh to Nubra over Khardung La
Cross Khardung La to the Nubra valley. Afternoon at the Hunder dunes with the Bactrian camels. Overnight Nubra.

Day 4
Nubra — Turtuk or Diskit
Either the drive out to Turtuk, a Balti village near the border, or a quieter day at Diskit monastery and the Maitreya statue.

Day 5
Nubra to Pangong via Shyok
The Shyok river route across to Pangong Tso. Arrive in time for the light on the water in late afternoon. Overnight in camp or a lakeside guesthouse.

Day 6
Pangong at leisure
Sunrise on the lake, then a slow day along the shore before returning towards Leh through the Chang La pass.

Sham valley
Magnetic Hill, the Indus–Zanskar confluence at Nimmu, Gurudwara Pathar Sahib and Alchi monastery. Overnight Leh.

Depart Leh
Early transfer to the airport for your flight out.

Do Indians need an Inner Line Permit for Nubra Valley and Pangong Lake?
No — Indian citizens do not need an Inner Line Permit for Nubra Valley, Pangong Lake or Ladakh's other protected areas; the Leh district permit portal says it applies only to foreign tourists. Indian tourists register as domestic visitors on lahdclehpermit.in, pay the environmental (green) fee, wildlife fee and Red Cross Fund online, and carry the printed permit. Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit.

Do you need to acclimatise in Leh before going to Khardung La and Pangong?
Yes — Leh's district administration says every tourist arriving in Leh must spend at least 48 hours acclimatising before going higher, to places such as Khardung La or Pangong Lake; nearby areas of Leh town can be visited meanwhile. That is why this itinerary keeps its first two days in and around Leh. Ladakh's tourism department also advises gaining no more than 300–500 metres a day above 3,000 metres.

Are there direct flights from Mumbai to Leh?
Only in summer. IndiGo runs a seasonal non-stop from Mumbai to Leh's Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport — daily from 29 March to 30 September in 2026, taking just under three hours. Published schedules show no Mumbai–Leh non-stop from October, so outside that season travellers from Mumbai connect through another city, such as Delhi.

Does a prepaid SIM work in Ladakh?
Not reliably — Ladakh Police's tourist safety advice says only post-paid mobile connections work in Ladakh because of security restrictions, and prepaid SIMs from other states are unreliable. Carry a post-paid number, or buy a temporary post-paid SIM in Leh. Mobile internet is good in Leh but limited in rural areas.
