A gondolier rowing past an arched stone bridge on a canal lined with old buildings

Shoulder season is doing more work than it used to

Peak weeks get busier and dearer every year. Moving a trip a fortnight either side often buys a better room and a quieter city for the same money.

The shape of the travel year has flattened. What used to be a clear high season and a clear low season is now a long, crowded middle, and the genuinely quiet windows have narrowed to a few weeks either side of the peak.

What shoulder season actually buys

Not just a lower rate. It buys the room category above the one you were going to book, a table at the restaurant that is full in August, and photographs without a queue in them. In Europe, late September often has better weather than late June and a fraction of the crowd.

Where it works best

Europe in May and late September. Japan in late November after the maple crowds thin. Bali in April. Rajasthan in early October before the season rate hike. Kerala in September, just as the monsoon breaks.

Where it does not

Anywhere driven by a natural event rather than a calendar. The Mara crossings, Ladakh road access, Andaman sea conditions and Himalayan visibility do not care about pricing seasons. For those, the right week is the right week.

How to use this

When you send us dates, send us the flexibility too. "Late March, nine nights, could move a week either way" gets you a materially better trip than a fixed set of dates, because it lets us price three options instead of one.
